In the setting, the time is revealed with uneasiness in the world. Gilbert enlists in the Great War of Europe taking his medical service to the front lines. This causes the two to be separated. Anne (Megan Follows) travels after Gilbert (Jonathon Crombie) to Europe in hopes of finding and reuniting with him, despite the grim circumstances. New characters are introduced as old ones are returned. Whatever path Anne takes and what sorrow she finds along the way, always leads her back to Avonlea. Her passion for her Avonlea, the beautiful place of her beginnings is carried throughout the story. Anne reunites with her childhood friend Diana Barry (Schuyler Grant), now married and raising a family of her own. Their love for each and friendship are timeless.
